而v+ing 的用法非常灵活，可以直接修饰名词(the changing seasons )，也可以修饰动词及其主语(I lifted the weight, whistling)甚至可以修饰整个句子如上例，只要这句子能能转换为名词性句子。之前的两个例子很好的说明了这个变化，我们可以表达：the recent decrease in crime... has led to a rise, 我们也可以这样表达： crime has recently decreased... leading to a rise，这种以ing 形式作表达主句的结果最为理想，不易让人产生疑问。
