定语从句的主谓一致取决于它所修饰的名词。定语从句修饰的部分决定定于从句中的谓语动词。例如，

他是七个人中唯一一个去耶鲁的：“He is the only one of the seven students who goes to Yale.”
我们从上面的第一个句子可以看出，出国的是七个学生所以谓语动词用“go”，而第二句中的从句“who goes to Yale”却不是修饰七个学生，它修饰的是去耶鲁的那个学生。由此，我们可以得出——如果从句修饰的不是就近的名词，可以通过单复数保证其跳跃修饰一致。如果出现的名词均为复数，则从句为就近修饰。
