分析：句子主语是The report，谓语动词是recommended，that 引导宾语从句，从句中的主语是the hospital，对比五个选项发现前三个选项中有should,最后两个选项没有，那么这道题是否在考察虚拟语气呢?不难发现，这个句子中确实有虚拟语气的提示词recommended ，而在GMAT语法中，虚拟语气的should是需要省略掉的。除此之外还有哪些错误呢?A选项and并列成分不对称，B选项and并列成分不对称，C选项也是and并列成分不对称。D选项and后边是名词，与前面的动词原形不并列。答案是E.
正确句子：
The report recommended that the hospital eliminate unneeded beds, consolidate expensive services, and use space in other hospitals .
验证：
主句主语是 report，谓语动词是recommended，that 引导宾语从句，从句中的主语是the hospital,谓语动词有三个，分别是eliminate ，consolidate and use ,满足平行并列。
例4：
Affording strategic proximity to the Strait of Gibraltar, Morocco was also of interest to the French throughout the first half of the twentieth century because they assumed that if they did not hold it, their grip on Algeria was always insecure.
(A) if they did not hold it, their grip on Algeria was always insecure
(B) without it their grip on Algeria would never be secure
(C) their grip on Algeria was not ever secure if they did not hold it
(D) without that, they could never be secure about their grip on Algeria
(E) never would their grip on Algeria be secure if they did not hold it
分析：句首doing结构的逻辑主语是句子的主语Morocco，所以affording 是修饰句子主语的。这里有个assumed，意思是假设，但这个不是虚拟语气的标志，因为GMAT中的虚拟要不就是if,要不就是建立命令要求，千万不要以为假设是虚拟。后面的内容用了if，if的条件状语从句是if x happened，then y would happen.这才是本题的考点。如果x是已经发生的，那么主句中就要使用would happen.A选项虚拟语气的would都没有，排除A。B选项用的是if的省略改成了without，没有问题，主句their grip on Algeria would never be secure，这里加上了would是没问题的。C选项，也是if引导的条件状语从句的虚拟，但是没有would，排除C。D选项中出现代词that，应该指的是相同概念的不同事物，但是这里that很明显指的是Morocco，所以用的不是特别好，could表虚拟也还将就可以，但是么有would好，排除D。E选项never在句首，句子倒装，也没有问题，但是相比B选项，B更加忠实原文，因为原文如果没有用倒装，我们最好也不要用倒装。
正确句子：

验证：Affording ，doing在句首修饰句子主语 Morocco ，谓语动词是 was，后边有个because 的原因状语从句，而从句中还有一个宾语从句，主语是they，指代的是 French，因为相同代词指代一样，所以their指代的也是French，it指代Morocco。
