关于文科GRE分数的争论历来是炙手可热。无疑分数越高越有利于得到admission和奖学金。但是究竟有没有一个底线,底线是多少呢?我2005年master申请成功后一直查阅各个学校的网站,现在即将申请PHD,发现文科的专业还是有一个底线的。
先拿top20的学校(学校的名字省略了)来说,系里网页上已经清清楚楚地写了:
applicants with scores below 650 on the verbal portion of the exam may be included in the review, but will normally have to have an exceptional record to be considered for admission and fellowship.
然后再看排名60多的学校,也很明确对GRE的VERBAL有要求:
Verbal scores are the most important. There is no Departmental minimum, but scores in the upper 500's (non-native English speakers) and lower 600's are very good, particularly for those wishing to be considered for a Teaching Assistantship.
最后看看排名100左右的学校:
Applicants should normally obtain the following minimum scores on the GRE examination:
Verbal Analytical
Native English Speakers 480 4
Non-Native English Speakers 400 3.5
当然你可以避开申请这些学校,也可以说我以偏概全。但是对于大多数没有什么特殊背景的本科生和研究生,尤其是在国内申请的,GRE上线无疑是敲门砖。什么越是名校越是不注重GRE的话,在文科申请时只能是crap.因为文科不像理科,学生可以找特定的老板,文科的申请只能是admission commitee决定,而你并不知道哪位教授起决定作用(注意不是起作用)。
top1-30 Verbal>600 preferred 650
top31-top100 Verbal>500
top 100以后 verbal>400
