Extended debate concerning the exact point of origin of individualfolktales told by Afro-American slaves has unfortunately taken precedence overanalysis of the tales’ meaning and function. Cultural continuities with Africawere not dependent on importation and perpetuation of specific folktales intheir pristine form. It is in the place that tales occupied in the lives of theslaves and in the meaning slaves derived from them that the clearestresemblances to African tradition can be found. Afro-American slaves did notborrow tales indiscriminately from the Whites among whom they lived. Blackpeople were most influenced by those Euro-American tales whose functionalmeaning and aesthetic appeal had the greatest similarity to the tales with deeproots in their ancestral homeland. Regardless of where slave tales came from, the essential point is that, with respect to language, delivery, details ofcharacterization, and plot, slaves quickly made them their own.

Extended debate concerning the exact point of origin of individualfolktales told by Afro-American slaves has unfortunatelytaken precedence over analysis of the tales’meaning and function.

  关键词importation, pristine等提示本句讨论origin; 关键词not dependent on提示origin不重要。

关键词in the place和in the meaning呼应meaning and function。It is…that强调句型提示其重要性。

关键词functional meaning 和aesthetic appeal呼应meaning and function。

  关键词came from提示origin,关键词regardless of提示origin不重要。

关键词language, delivery, details of characterization, and plot提示functionand meaning, slaves quickly made them their own提示这些才是重要的。

每层都是一方面讲述what is not the case,一方面说明what is the case。
