◆am & pm
1. am 意为“上午”，pm 意为“下午”，两者在用法上应注意以下几点：
(1) 两者都不能单独使用，而要与表示时间的数字连用，且置于数字之后;
(2) 不能与 in the morning 或 in the afternoon 连用，以免构成用词重复;
(3) 不能与 o’clock 连用。
他早上六点起床。
正: He gets up at 7 am.
正: He gets up at 7 (o’clock) in the morning.
误: He gets up at 7 am in the morning.
误: He gets up at 7 o’clock am.
2. 相应的短语有时可置于名词前作定语。如：
I missed the 5:45 pm train from Paris. 我没有赶上从巴黎开来的下午5点45分的列车。
◆amount n. & v.
1. 用作名词，意为“数量”、“金额”等，通常用于 a (great,large) amount of 这类结构，其后通常接不可数名词; 这类结构用作主语，其谓语的数取决于 amount 的数。如：
在这座桥上花了大量资金。
正: A large amount of money was spent on the bridge.
正: Large amounts of money were spent on the bridge.
比较：在 a great number of 之后通常接可数名词(用复数)。
2. 用作动词，意为“合计”、“等于”、“意味着”，通常是不及物动词，其后常接介词 to。如：
Building cost amounts to six million dollars. 建筑费用达600 万元。
Her reply amounts to a refusal. 她的回答等于拒绝。
This amounts to doing the whole thing over again. 这等于要把整个事重做一遍。
◆announce v.
表示“宣布”、“通告”等，通常为及物动词，其后可接名词或that-从句作宾语，但不接双宾语;要表示向某人宣布，用介词 to。如：
他向他们宣布了他的决定。
正：He announced his decision to them.
正：He announced to them his decision.
误：He announced them his decision.
