第三种题型与比较对比类和支持反对类题型既有区别又有联系。其区别在于独立观点类题型提问的方式往往是比较大、开放强，例如“你是怎么想的? ”，不会像前两类题型一样，要么要求比较两类观点选择其一的观点，要么要求对一种观点表示支持或反对。我们之前把比较对比类题目比作英语中以which开头的特殊疑问句，把支持反对类题目比作以助动词Do或Be引导的特殊疑问。而独立观点类题目就好比以What引导的特殊疑问句。考生在没有候选立场的情况下(既没有选择，也没有对错)给出自己的答案，并解释原因。
例题：
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Write about the following topic:
Some people prefer to live in a small town. Others prefer to live in a big city. What’s your opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.
就本题而言，考生可以就“在哪儿住”这一话题发表观点，而观点不必限于“在大城市住”和“在小城市住”这两个选项。
1.例题范文与解析：
Many people are struggling to decide whether they should settle down in big cities or retreat to small towns to live. Although both two choices provide tempting advantages, my preference lies in a third choice.
本文开头用“很多人挣扎着决定自己该留在大城市还是回到小城市”一句话直接引出关注的话题，而后提出自己不愿简单的二者选其一，而是支持第三种思路。需要注意的是，与比较对比和支持反对类题目不同的是，在独立观点类题目中，考生观点的选择范围比较宽松，不适用于前两类題目的中庸观点终于有用武之地了。
The accessible working opportunities are clearly a major concern in making my choice. As a young man eager to earn my own living, I am especially concerned with the working opportunities a place can provide. As most big companies prefer to set up their branches in big cities for various reasons, I would have a much larger chance in finding a job there. The job competition in small towns might not be as fierce as they arc in big cities, yet the total posts vacant could be not many in the first place, and it is precisely because of this that many of my friends who had chosen to find jobs in small owns ended up unemployed.
But my life demands more than opportunities. It requires, among others, a healthy, clean and peaceful environment where I can play with my family without worrying about air and water pollutions and where 1 can sleep at night without hearing noises. This requirement can never be fulfilled as long as I live in a big city like Bering, where everything is contrary.
本文中间部分釆用了两段写两个分论点的方法。第一段介绍大城市的优点，即它可以提供很多工作机会：第二段段首用一个转折句“生活不仅仅需要工作机会”引出小城市的优点，即它有健康、清洁和平静的生活环境。作者在这两段的论述中，先全是就事论事，没有倾向于任何一方。
自主观点类的文宇也可以按照比较对比类或者支持反对类题目的结构来写。就本题而言，就可以按照比较对比类题目来写：
Thanks to the development of public transportations, I now have a third solution. I may set up my family in a small town, commute to the nearby big city to work during daytime, and then return and spend ray evening in my own house. In this way, 1 will never have to worry about job opportunities or the environment.
有了中间部分两段的论述，作者在结尾段才正面论述自己的观点，即一方面在大城市工作，一方面把家安在小城市，每天利用公共交通往返于大小城市之间。亊实上，在东京、纽约这样的国际大都市里，很多人正是这样生活和工作的。
2.模板
方案1. 与A or B类相同。
方案2. 二者都有优点缺点，应当综合。
开头;People's ideas differ with regard to the question that...Some people believe Opinion A while others disagree by arguing Opinion B. Personally, I think both opinions have merits and demerits and they must be combined to...
中间段一 ：Opinion A triumphs over Opinion B because…
中间段二 ：Opinion A does have problems such as…, on which Opinion B offers better solutions.
结尾a : From what has been discussed, only by combining (he two opinions shall we be able to tackle problems such as... while avoiding difficulties like...
或
结尾b : From what has been discussed, we should follow Opinion A without ignoring Opinion B. 或
结尾c : From what has been discussed, we should combine Opinion A and Opinion B and at the same time avoid their respective problems.
方案3. 二者都有优点缺点，但应该选择第三条道路。
开头:People’s ideas differ with regard to the question that. Some people believe Opinion A while others disagree by arguing Opinion B. Personally, I think neither of the two is an ideal answer.
中间段一： Opinion A may be acceptable in…but it has fatal problems such as…
中间段二：Unfortunately，Opinion B offers no better solutions.
结 尾：In sum, there is some certain truth on both sides，yet neither provides a satisfactory answer. (In my view, we should…)
