Born in a ballet-ruling era, Loie Fuller established her own style of dance even though she was not quite accepted as an artist at first. Having received minimal formal dance training, Fuller wanted to create dances that emphasized free body movement rather than to follow the technical virtuosity of movement in ballet. Obsessed with the beauty of the nature, Fuller represented natural objects—Fire, the Lily, the Butterfly, and so on— in her dance. In order to achieve the best visual effects, she not only adopted electrical lighting, which was then in its infancy, but also invented special arrangements of mirrors. Despite such achievements, Fuller was unsatisfied with the response from the audience who took her dance for entertainments. With the purpose of bettering her dance, she went to Paris, the art capital of Europe, where she made friends with other famous artists and scientists who were amazed at her fantastic dance. Together with some artists who preferred natural motifs, she contributed to the fashionable Art Nouveau style, making her even more popular in Paris.
