可以获得此类素材的渠道可谓数之不尽、唾手可得——比如China Daily(《中国日报》)、Financial Times(《金融时报》)、The Economist(《经济学人》杂志)、Time(《时代》周刊)等等。
When Man-Made Problems Make Natural Disasters Worse
On April 16, 2013, an out-of-control fire at a fertilizer plant in the town of West, Texas, led to a massive explosion that would eventually kill 14 people — many of them firefighters responding to the blaze(火焰;火灾) — and injure more than 200 people.
The Associated Press reported that the West Chemical and Fertilizer Co., as the plant was called at the time, hasn’t been inspected by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) since 1985 — when it was issued a $30 fine for a “serious violation” for storage of anhydrous ammonia(液氨). It’s not uncommon for businesses to go years between inspections — it’s all but inevitable given the OSHA’s scarce resources and the size of its brief — but clearly something went very wrong at this plant. The Dallas Morning News reported that the West fertilizer company had earlier told the Environmental Protection Agency that there was no fire or explosive risk and that the company had implemented(实行) proper safety rules.
Disasters — natural and unnatural — will happen. But our failures can turn natural disasters into man-made ones — and man-made ones are always worse. We can’t make a perfect world, but we can create a more resilient one.
2008年5月的SAT Essay考题是“Do incidents from the past continue to influence the present?(过去发生的事情会影响现在吗?)” Without our past, our future would be a tortuous path leading to nowhere. In order to move up the ladder of success and achievement we must come to terms with our past and integrate it into our future. Even if in the past we made mistakes, this will only make wiser people out of us and guide us to where we are supposed to be. (65 words)
tortuous adj. Life is a tortuous path, full of twists and
turns.
the ladder of success
n. 成功的阶梯 “As you climb the ladder of success,
check occasionally to make sure that it is leaning against the right wall” -- This saying is highly inspirational.
integrate
v. This time we are looking for those who
can integrate with our team.
