1. 作状语。
这里大家要区分一个概念就是逻辑主语和句子主语，逻辑主语和句子的主语一般是不同的，是非谓语动词动作的执行者或承受者;它们在逻辑上存在着主谓关系或动宾关系，但不能直接作非谓语动词的主语，因此叫逻辑主语。真正的主语是句子的主语，而逻辑主语是除了主句外，另一个动作的发出者，有可能是动作的主语有可能不是。
例如：Time permitting, I will finish another fiction.分词有自己的逻辑主语time, 句子谓语finish 有自己主语I。
分词作状语的意义：
名词加分词表示条件 例如：Weather permitting , we’ll be going fishing tomorrow.
表示时间：例如：Reading the letter, she burst out crying.
表原因：例如：Not knowing what to do next, I want to ask for your advice.
表结果：例如：Finding the door locked, I went home.
表方式：例如：she running quickly into the classroom.
表示补充说明或是伴随状况:例如：she sat on the train ,looking through the window.

单个分词作定语要前置，作用相当于形容词，来修饰名词。

3.作补足语
分词充当句子的补足语一般仅限于感官动词后面： find ,hear, smell, watch 和notice 等。
