A TOEFL or IELTS score is required of all graduate student applicants whose native language is not English, regardless of citizenship status. The minimum language test scores accepted by the University of Denver are: 80 internet-based TOEFL, 550 paper-based TOEFL, or 6.0 IELTS. Some graduate departments require higher minimum language test scores for non-native English speakers. Please see chart below for specific departmental requirements or contact your prospective program directly.
Any graduate applicant whose native language is not English (including US citizens and permanent residents), regardless of his or her educational background, who wishes to be considered for any Graduate Teaching Assistantship during any year of study in any graduate department at DU must demonstrate fluency in spoken English by scoring a minimum of 26 on the Internet Based TOEFL (iBT) exam speaking section or an IELTS speaking score of 8.0.
