Paragraph 1:Groundwater is the word used to describe water that saturates the ground, filling all the available spaces. By far the most abundant type of groundwater is meteoric water; this is the groundwater that circulates as part of the water cycle. Ordinary meteoric water is water that has soaked into the ground from the surface, from precipitation (rain and snow) and from lakes and streams. There it remains, sometimes for long periods, before emerging at the surface again. At first thought it seems incredible hat there can be enough space in the “solid” ground underfoot to hold all this water.

但是并不是所有词汇题都这样简单，有些如果不参考原文，考生不能直接选出词汇题的答案，因为看上去四个选项词和题干词都没有直接的关系。以TPO4- Deer Populations of the Puget Sound中的第四题为例(篇幅所限，只保留段落重点句子)：
Paragraph 3: The numbers of deer have fluctuated markedly since the entry of Europeans into Puget Sound country. ○ immediately分析：in the same breath是一个词组，意义是“一口气地，几乎同时地，同时，齐声地”。看选项：impatiently adv. 无耐性地;humorously adv. 幽默地，滑稽地;adv. 连续不断地;immediately，adv. 立即，立刻，直接地。这其中并没有题干词组的同义词汇。所以考生在解题时应该从词组所在句子出发，找到可以替换词组的词汇。所在句子为：“The early explorers and settlers told of abundant deer in the early 1800s and yet almost in the same breath bemoaned the lack of this succulent game animal."可以理解为 “早期的探险家和殖民者说在19世纪早期那儿有大量的鹿群，…抱怨这种诱人的猎物稀少。”通过“almost”修饰“in the same breath”这样的搭配可以排除前两个选项，再通过and引导的并列关系及连接的“in the early 1800s”与“yet almost in the same breath”的对应关系可知 词组的含义应该和时间相关，在选项中第四个选项是可以放在这里的。从本题可以看出，词汇题考察的是在语境下可以替换的词汇。
