托福阅读考试中的修辞目的题主要考察的是考生在对全文理解的基础上，透过修辞手法比如比喻，拟人，举例子等等修辞手法，找到作者想要表达的真实内容的能力，考生在做这样的题目的时候，应该根据题目中的关键信息进行定位并向前看。
1.利用状语定位
在托福阅读考试中，如果考生想要解决修辞目的题，可以采用的办法之一就是利用状语进行定位，如果题目中有关于时间的词，比如yesterday，tomorrow等等词汇，就要学会利用它们定位文章中的关键信息。
比如考生在回答TPO26passage3中的第七题In paragraph 3, why does the author provide the information that the number of signs in use had dropped from 2,000 to 600 by 2300 B.C.E.?
○ To argue that the development of writing involved periods of growth followed by periods of decline
○ To demonstrate that earlier written texts used a larger vocabulary than later texts, which were aimed at a broader audience
○ To support the claim that the range of words expressed by logograms varied widely depending on time period and type of text
○ To provide evidence for the increased efficiency of using signs to express syllables rather than whole words
首先就可以利用时间点，在文章中定位到by 2300B.C.E.the number of signs required had been reduced to 600,发现这句话中没有观点的时候，可以在这个单词附近进行搜索，发现在前面出现了表达作者观点的语句即A more economical approach was to use a sign to express not a whole world but a single syllable.即更加有效率的方法就是用音节来表达。而这句话的同意改写就是D选项。A选项说争论这个下降，之说明了本句，并没有说观点句，所以错误，B选项中增加比较级，所以错误;c选项中on time period and type of text在原文中并没有提到。所以正确的选项是A。
二.利用名词定位
在做这个题目的时候，如果考生没有发现时间词，就可以用名词进行定位，然后再往前找关键性的信息。比如考生在回答TPO5passage2 Why does the author mention the views of “Patrick Kirch”?
○ To present evidence in favor of Heyerdahl’s idea about American Indians reaching Oceania
○ To emphasize the familiarity of Pacific islanders with crops from many different regions of the world
○ To indicate that supposed proof for Heyerdahl’s theory has an alternative explanation
○ To demonstrate that some of the same crops were cultivated in both South America and Oceania
考生回答这个题目的时候，就可以利用这个名词进行定位，然后再往前看，however句和前句是有着十分米奇的衔接的，因此我们可以定位到The undisputed pre-Columbian presence in Oceania of the sweet potato, which is a New World domesticate, has sometimes been used to support Heyerdahl’s “American Indians in the Pacific” theories. However, this is one plant out of a long list of Southeast Asian domesticates.这句话说天土豆的出现支持了H的理论，紧接着就来了个转折，说明PK的观点不支持H的观点，A选项说反了，C选项中的alternative explanation正确，B和D在文章中都没有出现。
修辞目的题一般问的是细节，细节往往是为了支撑前面出现的观点而存在的，所以考生在备考的过程中，一定要学会根据关键词定位，然后再往前找关键信息的技巧，帮助自己在考试中取得高分!
