作者为了表达清楚自己的观点，有时会对同一个内容采用两种不同的表述方法，由此来帮助作者高效理解内容，也避免一些词汇的重复使用。比如在OG Applied Arts and Fine Arts一文中，句子：This was done because the cannonball was needed to support the weight of the leg. 比如在词汇题中，考察词汇的同义替换，当然要注意语境;在事实信息题中同义替换体现的最为明显，为了提高考题的难度，正确选项往往是对原文内容的同义替换，当然这和事实信息题的出题过程有关：托福阅读事实信息题出题时，出题者会在文章中找到一个句子或者一个句群(完整表达一个内容的几个句子);然后对这个句子进行同义替换，也就是改变某些词汇或者句型;最后出题者会将这个句子中的一部分放在题干中，一部分放在选项中备选。所以考生只有了解同义替换才能在解题中对选项的变化有所把握。
