一.利用构词法来猜词
在托福阅读考试中，词汇部分始终是我们备考的基础。在托福阅读考试中，需要考生掌握大约八千个单词左右的词汇量，而且在每篇阅读文章之后都会出现3-4个专门考察考生掌握词汇的情况的题目，在这个过程中，如果考生遇到了一些自己不认识的单词，就可以使用构词法来猜词。就像中国文字的构成有它固定的构词法一样，英语也是这样。比如popul这个词根表达的是人民的意思，那么popul+ation表达的就是全体居民的意思，popul+形容词词缀ous表达的就是人口稠密的。比如考生在回答TPO26PASSAGE3中的The word “engraved” in the passage is closest in meaning to_A. carved B. produced C. dated D. discovered的时候，如果不认识单词engrave，就可以用构词法来进行猜测，en这个前缀表达的意思是使…进入状态，grave的意思是墓穴，那么连起来进行推断，我们就可以推测出最合适的答案是A。
二.掌握句子结构
在托福阅读考试中，会出现大量的长难句，而且在题目中也会出现考察考生语法实力的题型，因此小编认为，考生在做题的过程中，一定要学会掌握句子结构，看到一句话，首先分析这句话的主干和修饰成分，以及逻辑连接词，弄清楚这句话究竟在将什么。比如，当考生在阅读TPO3中的In order for the structure to achieve the size and strength necessary to meet its purpose, architecture employs methods for support that, because they are based on physical laws, have changed little since people first discovered them – even while building material shave changed dramatically.的时候，就应该先看它的主干成分，architecture employs methods…，然后再去了解它的修饰成分，同位语even while building materials have changed dramatically和定语从句that, because they are based on physical laws, have changed little since people first discovered them。把以上信息整合之后，翻译出这句话的主要内容为了使建筑结构能够达到实现其使用目的所必须的尺寸和强度，建筑学采用了支持的方法，由于这些方法是基于物理定律的，自从人类首次发现它们以来，这些方法几乎没有改变 – 即使当建筑材料已经发生了巨大的变化时。同样的，当考生在做TPO2Passage3中的The word it in the passage refers to_A.The advent of projectionB.The viewer's relationship with the imageC.A similar machineD.Celluloid的时候，可以看出it表示的是指代关系，在原句中It suddenly became public-an experience that the viewer shared with dozens, scores, and even hundreds of others.做的是主语，那么在表示指代关系的时候，我们也应该往前找，结合上句中With the advent of projection, the viewer's relationship with the image was no longer private, as it had been with earlier peepshow devices such as the Kinetoscope and the Mutoscope, which was a similar machine that reproduced motion by means of successive images on individual photographic cards instead of on strips of celluloid.的主语是the viewer's relationship with the image，因此考生就可以很容易的选出正确的答案B。
