Mood for Grammar
It kind of upsets me a little bit when people always use the Imperative Mood to talk to me although they may not intend to do that. I have to say that speaking in that way could be a serious off-putting at times, for example, you may message your future professors in an quite indecorous manner, even they may not take offence considering that you are a foreigner, I personally think it’s paramount to communicate politely.
Anyway, I just intend to give a brief introduction on Indicative Mood, Imperative Mood and Subjunctive Mood since Grammar is a strength for Chinese English learners and some learners are as good as a grammarian. So I’m not particularly looking to show myself up, but I have to say that MAN, DON’T BE SO ADDICTIVE TO GRAMMER.
1, Indicative Mood states an actuality or fact
---we will go to see a movie.
---I will take her to dinner.
2, Imperative Mood makes a request
---Let’s go to see a movie
---Pleases stop bugging me
Also it could be unpleasant or goofy so you better use it with discretion
---Get off my back!
---Knock it off!
---Cut the crap!
---Get out, I don’t believe you
So on and so forth
3, Subjunctive Mood expresses a doubtful condition or something unlikely.
---If I were you, I wouldn’t buy a house.
---Hadn’t spilled coffee over you, we wouldn’t have gone this far.
---I wish I had a lot of money.
---I wish I were more organized.
---if I were to set up a new company, I wouldn’t impose many ridiculous policies.
The following verbs often attract the subjunctive mood: ask, recommend, suggest, wish, insist, order, commend, request, and demand. A verb in the subjunctive mood may have a different form. The subjunctive for the present tense third-person singular drops the s or es so that it looks and sounds like the present tense for everything else. In the subjunctive mood, the verb to be is be in the present tense and were in the past tense, regardless of what the subject is.
--Incorrect: Our suggestion is that everyone on the team does the survey.
--Correct: Our suggestion is that everyone on the team do the survey.
--Incorrect: She recommended that each student takes a note.
--Correct: She recommended that each student take a note.
