Intonation and speed of speaking
Several weeks ago, I was complained by a student because I pointed out that her intonation wasn’t proper and pleasant to her interlocutors. To be blunt, her intonation was clearly exaggerated, which seriously made me feel so uncomfortable. Therefore, I suggested her trying to refrain from going up and down too much on every word and avoid ending high at the end of a sentence.
Sadly, she complained about it, saying that what I said about intonation is running contrary to what she had been taught,
However, I firmly believe that there are some rules about intonation and speed of speaking I’ve been holding on to can definitely stand the test of time, let alone the mere toefl oral test.
Let’s check them out!
1---In many situations, being monotone is better than having bad intonation.
It might sound strange but it’s a rule that you should remember and maybe try to internalize. As you know, improper intonation may convey distorted information and connotation, therefore being monotone is better than having bad intonation
2--- Start high and end low
This is a piece of useful rule to follow in order to correct bad intonation.
3---Don’t go up and down too much on every word.
If you do this, you’ll sound really like a pompous and retarded moron!
4---You should avoid ending high at the end of a sentence
Needless to say, this will make you sound like a crowing rooster. Ha ha ~~~
Speed of speaking
A common mistake of people who obtain English fluency with improper pronunciation and intonation is the speed in which they speak. Because they do not have perfect pronunciation and intonation, it is difficult to understand people who speak too fast. This is the biggest problem I have seen from people who gain confidence in speaking.
In order to improve your communication, and to hear "excuse me" less often, it is important to have the correct speed of speaking. For people with confidence, my advice is to slow down and to speak clearly. Don't blend words together too much and make sure to separate words with a small pause for words that are difficult to pronounce.
