What does the man imply?
急速上升↗，含有不屑一顾的感觉。The woman’s home is too small成为了正确答案。
答案是听出来的，绝不是看出来的。”
例如：
---Something hit the window.(有东西打到玻璃上了。)
---What?(什么?)
What does the man mean?
一般而言，“What?”的语调可分为以下三种：
1) 自然上升语调↗读出，等于“I didn’t get it. Please say that again.”
2) 夸张式的上升语调↗↗读出 “Really? How could this happen?”
3) 下降语调↘读出， “What hit the window?”
再比如：
--- M: You go ahead, and sit next to Marisa. I don't want her talking to me throughout the whole movie.
--- W: And I do?(我愿意?)
若是“And I do ↘”，表示“我愿意跟他说话”的同意含义;但若为“And I do ↗”，则表示“你不愿意，我就愿意了?”，言外之意，“我也不愿意。”因而就成了否定含义。
一般而言，
降调↘表示：肯定、命令、赞同。
升调↗表示：疑问、怀疑、反对;
-- You waited at Tera’s Café yesterday, didn’t you? Was there much of a wait to be seated?(昨天你去Tera餐馆吃饭，是不是要等很久才有座位啊!)
--- Was there? ↘ Wish I’d brought a book or something to occupy my time.(你说呢?当然了。真希望带本书什么的来消磨时间。注意：降调表肯定。言外之意：等位子吃饭的人确实很多。)
--- Didn’t you think George give a great speech?(你不觉得George演讲很精彩吗?)
--- Are you serious? ↗(你是认真的吗?注意：升调表否定。言外之意：我不这么认为。)
--- Do you want to go on a trip with us to Florida this spring? It will cost about $300 a person.(今年春天想跟我们去佛罗里达旅行吗?每人要付300美圆。)
--- $300? ↗ Do you think I just inherited a fortune?(300美圆?你不会认为我继承了大笔财产吧。注意：升调表否定。言外之意：300美圆太贵，我不去了。)
