Which of the following community service would you choose to do? Working with children, cleaning the city park or planting a campus garden.
通过审题,我们可以看出,该题是Task1中常出现的“三选一”题型,该题型在2014年大陆区考试Task1中出现频率为3次(2014/02/22, 2014/03/22,2014/06/29),并且我们不难发现,该题与2014年3月15日的“Describe one type of community work you want to take part in”高度相似。三个选项中,关键词分别为:children, city park和campus garden,从本质上来说,是要迅速想出这三者分别具有的好处(advantages),很明显,根据我们POINT-REASON1- EXAMPLE1-REASON2-EXAMPLE的思路,我们可以秒想三个选项各自的2个好处:
Working with children:1.Improve patience;2.Have pure and simple fun.
Cleaning the city park:1.Beautify the cityscape; 2.Fresh air and picturesque view
Planting campus garden:1.Help students engage in earth stewardship; 2.Have access to healthy food ingredients.
假设我们选择第三个选项planting campus garden,在正式答题前,我们不得不提到的一点是,很多考生在看到campus garden的时候都不假思索地认为其就是一般的花园,但事实上,如果我们浏览国外高校的网站,就不难发现,大部分高校的campus garden其实是给学生提供自己种植蔬果机会的菜园。这样我们很容易就想到上表中给出的两个好处(help students engage in earth stewardship; have access to healthy food ingredients),现在要解决的问题就是如何在较短时间之内准备有质量的例子来支撑我们的论点。下面我们来总结一下举例子的方法:
1. 细化法。以本题为例,我们的第一个论点是“帮助学生从事种植工作” (help students engage in earth stewardship),所谓的earth stewardship就可以细化为具体为种植的一系列细节工作,包括:sow seed(播种),plough(犁地),water,fertilize(施肥)等等。这种方法的本质就是将比较概括的概念具体化。很明显,这种方法常会使用到的连接词有:such as, like, ranging from…to…, including等。
2. 经历化。考生并不需要亲身经历才能举例子,很多经历是可以现场构造的,只要遵循WHEN-WHO-WHAT-WHERE-WHY-RESULT即可。我们还是以help students engage in earth stewardship为例,该经历可叙述为:
Last year, my cousin, who’s currently doing finance in Missouri State University, joined a program of planting campus garden held by her university and according to her, that was an incredible experience of education.
这种方法的不足之处在于,时间不好把控,容易超时,但在论点不足或细节不够的情况下,它也是一种良策。
3. 同意转换。不可否认,在短时间内想出具体细节对每位考生来说都是很大的挑战,再加上由准备时间带来的压力,很多考生遇到全新的题目时都会手足无措,针对这种情况,我们可以采取就论点中的形容词、动词进行同意替换的方法。以本题第二论点(have access to healthy food ingredients)为例,可以在大体意思上替代have access to的表达有:acquire, obtain, gain, get one step closer to等,同样的,healthy food ingredients也可以转换为:organic food sources,green food,pollution-free fruits and vegetables等。那么这个论点的细节就可组织为:
That is to say, students involved in this activity can obtain organic and pollution-free food sources.
我们可以将这种方法看作是托福口语考试中的救命稻草和应急措施,它并不完美,但可以在短时间内增加考生的话语量。很明显,这种方法常用的连接手段有:That is to say, by that I mean, in other words, specifically等。
根据以上分析,我们可以将答案整理为:
Personally speaking, I would choose planting the campus garden over the other two community services for the following two reasons. For one thing, it will help me engage in earth stewardship. Specifically, there’s a lot to learn about planting, ranging from sowing seeds, plowing, to fertilization. For another, by doing so, I can have access to healthier food ingredients and thus gain a stronger sense of achievement. By that I mean, it will enable me to enjoy plenty of organic and pollution-free food sources.
