Imparting knowledge is absolutely the basic function of a teacher, whereas delivering views in social and political is also crucial in teaching. Teachers have the obligation to disseminate some of their own views because the students are too young to form an independent thinking about events, and because these independent thoughts in an early age are important. Therefore, I think teachers should make their social and political views known by sudents.
Education marks the most important 17 to 20 years in the early stage of an individual's life. In the core of this process lie the teachers, who provide us knowledge, and share with us values and standards of judgment in life. A good teacher is one who not only is effective in the transfer of knowledge, but one who makes his or her views about family, love, or institutional arrangement known to their students, which could prove to be great guidance later in life.
A teacher who only imparts academic information in class will only cultivate robots of academic excellence, but also of social isolation and political irrelevance. Each person is bound in a 3-dimensional world, namely, academia, social circle and political involvement. No one can get away from them and still be a well-rounded all around being. (in case he or she may want to be a hermit.) By the time a high school junior evolves into a senior, how to deal with his personal relationship and how to use his newly discovered voting right become head aching. Teachers' words about these affairs can then be quite enlightening.
The world has seen precedent when a sharing teacher gave rise to a more promising student. Had Aristotle not educated Alexander III on philosophy and political science, the latter would have been Alexander III instead of Alexander the great. It is because of those selfless teachers that students gain insights into the complex world outside the campus, and found a way out of his personal dilemma and confusion. Teacher's opinions about social and political events are not only important but necessary.
Some may argue that students are still growing up with limited knowledge and life experience, and a teacher's social and political opinion may be brainwashing them and send their lives down different paths. I still feel overwhelmingly convinced of the central duty of the teacher as the engineer of the human soul and as the usher into the world one lives in at the last stage of the socialization process, education. It's with much gratefulness that I conclude this argument by saying thanks to those teachers from whom I've had the privilege of taking a glimpse of the world I would be a part of in the last few minutes of some of their lectures. By all means, knowledge, YES! But, a little on the side, please!
