Chapter 13 Evaluate the Argument Questions
2,7,12,27,39,44,49,69,72,74,108
Evaluate the Argument questions are actually a combination of the Second and Third Families, and as such you should keep the following considerations in mind:
1. In all Second and Third Family questions, the information in the stimulus is suspect, so you should search for the reasoning error present.
2. The answer choices are accept as given, even if they include “new” information. Your task is to determine which answer choice best helps determine the validity of the argument.
The Variance Test
The Variance Test consists of supplying two polar opposite responses to the question posed in the answer choice and the analyzing how the varying responses affect the conclusion in the stimulus.
If different responses produce different effects on the conclusion, then the answer choice is correct. If different responses do not produce different t effects, then the answer choice is incorrect.
取非的时候 :用到yes or no , very important or not important ,0% or 100%
Keep in mind that the Variance Test should only be applied to the contending answer choices.

Bold Face Questions by Daisy
17,29,64,77,79,89,97,117,124
1. Opinion or Evidence:
Evidence is what has actually occurred, for example, a result of an experiment.
Choices that indicate evidence:
contract, fact, background, information, consideration, circumstance, finding, evidence.
Opinion is what the argument infers or what the author think.
Indicator of opinion in the stimulus:
I think, believe, recommend, justified, should be rejected, it is reasonable…
Indicator of opinion in the choices
position, claim, judgment, opinion:
2. Attitude: Support or Refute
3. Verb tense:
If the author use will or would in the argument, the sentence is probably a prediction.
4. Pay attention to the conclusion
There may be a main conclusion and an intermediate conclusion. Also, sometimes, there is a prediction outcome of the conclusion. Be sure which sentence the main conclusion is. For example, the argument would say “Clearly, …” Don’t assume that “Clearly” must indicate that the sentence is the conclusion. Sometimes, it’s not and misleads you.
5.Read the Boldface carefully and focus on the indicators to see the relations between the Boldface and other sentences.
End
Do not get caught up in trying to answer one question. You cannot spend an exorbitant amount of time on a single question and still hope to complete the section. For instance, if you spend four minutes on one question, then you have lost the opportunity to complete at least two other questions. Remember, the goal is to win the war, and it is acceptable to lose a battle now and then.
If you do accidentally get caught up in one question, do not let the frustration carry over to the next question. Once you have completed a question, put it out of your mind and move on.
Know when to say when. If you have spent a minute and a half on a question, ask yourself how much more time you will need to solve the question. You want to maximize your return on the time you spend on each question, so if you think you can solve the question in relatively short order, go ahead and finish off the problem. On the other hand, if you do not see a clear path to solving the question, cut your losses and move to the next question without remorse. As they say, don’t throw good money after bad.
We strongly believe that performing well requires confidence and a belief that I can perform well !
