一、代词的作用是用来指代名词，以避免用词重复。
我们看一个句子：
Gasoline has become so expensive that IT now consumes as much as 16% of personal income in some rural areas.
这个句子当中出现了代词it，它指代的名词是Gasoline ，所以我们把代词指代的这个名词叫做先行词，所以句子当中如果出现了代词，一定要找出对应的先行词，
二、如果划线部分出现了代词(it、its、they、them、their)我们要确定哪些内容?
1、要确定先行词是否存在。
2、要确定先行词是否唯一(一个代词只能指代一个先行词)。
3、先行词和代词是否符合逻辑意义(是否讲得通)。
4、先行词与代词的单复数是否一致。

三、先行词必须存在
例：The park rangers discussed measures to prevent severe wildfires ,which would be devastating to IT.
公园管理人讨论措施去避免能给公园造成巨大毁灭性的野火。
所以根据句意可以了解到IT应该指代公园THE PARK，我们回到句子当中发现其实The park在这里充当定语修饰名词rangers ，The park本身不是个名词，所以这里it指代就是错误的。
改法：将代词改为要指代的先行词。
The rangers discussed measures to prevent severe wildfires ,which would be devastating to The park. 这样这个句子就是正确的。(这里大家发现rangers 前边没有park修饰了，根据句子意思我们可以了解到这个管理员就是公园的管理员，只不过为了避免重复就省略了，当然如果加上也是正确的。)
四、先行词必须唯一
例：Researchers claim to have developed new “nano-papers”incorporating tiny cellulose fibers,which they allege give them the strength of cast iron.
绿色标注出来的是代词，都是复数形式，所以可以知道它们指代的是复数名词，那么我们就需要从句子当中看一下有哪些复数名词?其中Researchers ，nano-papers以及fibers都是复数名词，如果无法判断到底指代的哪个名词的时候，我们就需要通过逻辑意思来理解。
从逻辑语意上说：they指代 Researchers (因为allege的发声者必须是人); them 指代 Nano Papers(根据句义，是这些纤维给纳米纸钢铁般的力量)。但是从实际语法上来说 they和them可以同时指代Researchers或者Papers。
改法：将代词改为要指代的先行词。
Researchers claim to have developed new nano-papers incorporating tiny cellulose fibers, which allegedly give these materials the strength of cast iron.
五、先行词和代词必须符合逻辑意义
Although the term "supercomputer" (从句主语)may sound fanciful or exaggerated, IT is simply an extremely fast mainframe that can execute trillions of calculations every second.
我们在之前的系动词平行并列结构中讲解获知，系动词前后的成分要平行并列，本句中系动词后面是an extremely fast mainframe，mainframe的意思是主机，也就是computer的意思，那么我们就需要看一下IT指代的是否也是computer。可见此句中it指代的是the term(术语)，而术语本身不能is simply an extremely fast mainframe，所以是错的。
改法：
Although the term "supercomputer" may sound fanciful or exaggerated, IT simply REFERS TO an extremely fast mainframe that can execute trillions of calculations every second.
在此句中，it虽然同样指代term，但它后面接的是refer to，是说，术语指代了一个extremely fast mainframe，这样就可以了。
六、先行词与代词的单复数必须一致
如果选项中的先行词，有单数和复数都出现了，那么要回到原句子来判断，可以借助先行词的代词或动词来确定先行词的单复形式
Confronted by radical changes in production and distribution, modern Hollywood studios are attempting various experiments in an effort to retain its status as the primary arbiter of movie consumption.
Its指代studios，然而it是单数形似，而studio是复数形式，所以要改变先行词或代词的单复数。
改法1：将代词改为复数形式：Confronted by radical changes in production and distribution, modern Hollywood STUDIOS are attempting various experiments in an effort to retain their status as the primary arbiters of movie consumption.
改法2：将先行词改为单数形式：Confronted by radical changes in production and distribution, the modern Hollywood STUDIO is attempting various experiments in an effort to retain its status as the primary arbiter of movie consumption.
七、注意事项：
1、代词的格
1)主格：I，you,she,he,it,we,they,who
2)宾格：me,you,him,her,it,us,them,whom
3)所有格：my/mine,your/yours,his,her/hers,its,our/ours,their/theirs,whose
2、常考现象
1)有时候代词会倾向于指代相同格的先行词，尤其是在并列结构中。
2)名词的所有格(以`s或s`结尾的词)一般不作为主格或宾格代词的先行词。
