In 1970s, gender inequality was a prevalent problem in many countries. Kenya was among these countries. Women at that time were too obedient to think independently for their rights and benefits. Unlike those who remained to be deaf and blind to such important issues, Wangari Maathai, a female professor, had engaged in serious thinking for years, attempting to improve democracy and women’s conditions. In order to combine other women’s efforts, she led the “Green Belt Movement” which taught women to earn a decent living by planting trees and making money. Through this hands-on method, women would also know that restoring forests is part of a larger mission to create a society that respects them. Such awareness of equality and democracy, however, undermined the order of the men-dominated system of the country. Thus, Maathai was threatened and arrested by the police for many times. However, nothing could ever change her mind. The admirable perseverance made her so renowned that international humanity organizations came to help, forcing the government to release her. Although she was not appreciated by the former rulers who thought her to be a threat to the order of the country, she was highly praised internationally and awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
