We currently have a maximum of about 60 minutes to prepare for tech disruptions(破坏) on Earth due to coronal mass ejections(日冕物质抛射) from the sun, but an improved forecasting(预测系统) system could lengthen that lead time by hours.
Our sun has a nasty(令人不愉快的食物) habit of spitting (分散)volatile material (挥发性物质)at us. These incredibly hot bubbles of magnetized(已磁化的) material are called coronal mass ejections(日冕物质抛射), or CMEs. And they can hurtle (碰撞)towards Earth at thousands of miles per second.
If one of a CME’s magnetic fields is aligned (结盟)in just the wrong way when the ejection reaches Earth, it could cause a magnetic storm that can temporarily disrupt the planet’s magnetic field. Such a storm has the potential to wreak havoc(肆虐) on technologies like GPS satellites and utility grids(网络), messing up radio transmissions and causing blackouts(黑朦).
Currently, satellites can only tease out the orientations of magnetic fields inside an approaching CME when it’s already closing in on Earth. We’d have about an hour’s notice of an impending (即将发生)space storm—hardly enough time for anyone to take the necessary protective(保护措施)measures.
But a team led by space scientist Neel Savani, of NASA and the University of Maryland, have developed a new technique that might be able to give us a lot more lead time. Their model uses observations of the CME’s magnetic field orientations during the initial(一开始) eruption and as it careens toward Earth—which can offer clues about what those orientations will be when they get here.
Savani has already tested out his model’s predictive power on eight mass ejections(喷出). He claims significant improvement over current forecasting systems. At the very least, better advance warning would give people more time to finally back up their hard drives before the grid (格子)goes down.
疑难句:
1. We currently have a maximum of about 60 minutes to prepare for tech disruptions(破坏) on Earth due to coronal mass ejections(日冕物质抛射) from the sun, but an improved forecasting(预测系统) system could lengthen that lead time by hours.
But引导的两个句子,第二个句子中包含一个that引导的宾语从句,作lengthen的宾语。
2. If one of a CME’s magnetic fields is aligned (结盟)in just the wrong way when the ejection reaches Earth, it could cause a magnetic storm that can temporarily disrupt the planet’s magnetic field.
If引导的条件状语从句,在从句中又有一个when引导的时间状语从句;在主句中有一个that引导的定语从句。
3. But a team led by space scientist Neel Savani, of NASA and the University of Maryland, have developed a new technique that might be able to give us a lot more lead time.
