很多托福考生有一个共同的阅读习惯，那就是看到一句话就开始逐字地阅读，试图把每句话都搞懂、吃透，这在托福考试中是不适用的。因为托福阅读的考试时间非常紧张，如果按照这种方法进行阅读，很可能出现答不完的情况。那么，最有效的阅读方法就是找句子的主干，只要找到了句子的主干，这句话的意思也就基本明确了。例如：
The deer which once picturesquely dotted the meadows around the fort were gone in 1832, hunted to extermination in order to protect the crops.
这个句子较长，其中有which引导的定语从句，还有hunted…这个状语，但阅读时我们只需找到句子的主干“The deer were gone”就能基本理解这句话的大概意思。
二、明确逻辑关系
考生在阅读句子时除了要抓住句子的主干，还要明确句子的逻辑关系。句子的逻辑关系是由连接词体现出来的，比如题干中若出现“effect”、“conclusion”之类的词，就提示我们对应的信息在原文的后半部分。托福阅读中比较典型的就是句子简化题，这类题的选项都是比较长的句子，如果把这些句子一一看完，似乎要花费很长的时间。事实上，考生并不需要每个句子都要细看，而是先明确原句的逻辑关系，抓住选项中的关键点与原句进行比较。例如：
As a result of crustal adjustments and faulting, the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Mediterranean now connects to the Atlantic, opened, and water cascaded spectacularly back into the Mediterranean.
A. The strait of Gibraltar reopened when the Mediterranean and the Atlantic became connected and the cascades of water from one sea to the other caused crustal adjustments and faulting.
B. The Mediterranean was dramatically refilled by water from the Atlantic when crustal adjustments and faulting opened the Strait of Gibraltar, the place where the two seas are joined.
C. The cascades of water from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean were not as spectacular as the crustal adjustments and faulting that occurred when the Strait of Gibraltar was connected to those seas.
D. As a result of crustal adjustments and faulting; and the creation of the Strait of Gibraltar, the Atlantic and Mediterranean were connected and became a single sea with spectacular cascades of water between them.
原句是一个因果逻辑的句子，原因是“crustal adjustments and faulting”，结果是“the Strait opened, and water cascaded spectacularly back into the Mediterranean”，接着来看选项：A选项“…caused crustal adjustments and faulting”显然是因果倒置了，毫不犹豫排除;C选项中出现比较“not as spectacular as”，而原文中用的是副词“spectacularly”来修饰动词“cascade”，并没有进行比较，因此也排除掉;D选项“As a result of crustal adjustments and faulting and the creation of the Strait of Gibraltar…”和原文对比多出一个原因，因此排除;所以这道题的正确答案就是B选项。
