  第一部分:阅读文本解析

  Approximately 55 million years ago, the Eocene Epoch began. It lasted for roughly 21 million years. The Eocene Epoch is noted for both the rise of mammals during it and the marked increase in global temperatures, with the average temperature rising between five and seven degrees Celsius.

  Researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego attribute the global warming that occurred then to disruptions in ocean currents. According to these scientists, the currents in the ocean actually stopped flowing. Normally, one result of flowing currents is that warm water is displaced by cooler water. These currents can strongly affect the temperatures of the lands they pass near. However, when the ocean currents ceased flowing, warm water remained in place, which caused surface temperatures in numerous regions to rise.

  Other experts attribute the Eocene warming to one or more major asteroid strikes on the planet. Around the time the Eocene Epoch began, an asteroid impacted North America and formed Chesapeake Bay, which is located in the eastern United States. There were some other large strikes in Siberia in Russia around that time as well. The impacts from these strikes could have caused debris and ash to go high in the atmosphere and stay there for years. As a result, a greenhouse effect would have occurred and made Earth’s temperatures rise significantly.

  Finally, some believe that the release of massive amounts of methane into the atmosphere caused a global greenhouse effect. At the bottom of the oceans, there is a large amount of methane trapped in ice. Any warming of the Earth’s oceans could have made the ice melt. This would have released the methane into the atmosphere. With so much methane in the air, Earth's temperatures would have continued rising until much of it dissipated.

  W Professor: 55 million years ago, Earth’s atmosphere became much warmer over a period of around one thousand years. That’s rather quick in geological terms. This started the Eocene Epoch, which endured high global temperatures for virtually its entire twenty-one million years.

  Okay, so, uh, some scientists have claimed that ocean currents slowed down …or possibly even stopped flowing . . . and that caused temperatures to rise. It's an interesting theory, but it doesn't really have any factual basis. You see, um, scientists have done a lot of computer modeling on ocean currents and how they affect temperatures. And we’ve learned that while currents and waves do carry heat, they don't transmit enough of it to have an effect on a global scale.

  So it wasn't ocean currents that caused the rise in temperatures.

  Some have attributed the rising temperatures to an asteroid impact. It’s true that asteroid impacts can have global effects. An asteroid likely killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, and asteroid strikes have resulted in mass extinctions at other times in Earth's past. But ... Remember that the Eocene warming occurred over a period of about a thousand years. An asteroid impact would have affected global temperatures much faster. And, temperatures would have likely returned to normal fairly soon after the atmosphere cleared up. So it wasn’t an asteroid either.

  The thousand-year rise of the planet’s temperature also eliminates from contention the theory that the release of methane from the oceans caused global warming to occur. Again, yes, some amount of methane was released. But any warming that occurred due to the release of methane would have taken thousands of years to happen. No, something else caused this sudden—er, geologically speaking—rise in the Earth’s temperature. It just wasn't methane that did it.

  ①The lecturer argues that the theories on global warming during the Eocene Epoch cannot be supported with valid proof. ②This directly refutes the reading passage’s claim that there are three possible factors which could have caused the rising temperatures during that time.

  First, no factual evidence can confirm the change in ocean currents. Extensive computer modeling on ocean currents and the influence on temperature has been done, and it has been found that the heat carried by ocean currents and waves is not transmitted strongly enough to affect the overall temperature of the Earth. ③This contradicts the claim from the reading passage that the modification in ocean currents would have trapped warm water in a specific place.

  ④On top of that, the lecturer contends that global warming took about a thousand years. However, if the temperature had been affected by an asteroid impact as stated in the reading passage, the alteration in temperature should have occurred faster, and the temperature should have returned to its previous range once the atmosphere had been purified. ⑤This rebuts the reading passage’s claim that after asteroid strikes, debris and ash thrown into the atmosphere resulted in rising temperatures during the period.

  Finally, ⑥the lecturer asserts that it seems impossible that methane could have affected the temperature. If methane alone had caused the climate to change, it would have taken much longer; rather, there must have been more components that caused global warming. ⑦This contradicts the idea presented in the reading passage that methane trapped under the ice was released into the atmosphere when the ice melted, causing the temperature to increase.
