16. Endeavor n. 努力 vi. 努力去做
【例】To halt the accelerating deterioration of environment in our country, we must call upon a concerted endeavor among the government, the business industries and the people all together. 为了阻止加速的环境恶化，我们需要呼吁政府，产业界和人民的共同努力。
中文中我们其实很常用努力的名词形式， 想到英文脑海里就只有hard work,白话到路人程度，情何以堪啊!endeavor唯一的近义词是attempt，但是attempt更多的带有尝试的意思，这个努力未必能成。互换的时候要注意这个区别。
17. Vulnerable adj. 容易受伤的，脆弱的
【例】The fate of these cultural heritages remains vulnerable. 这些文化遗产的命运很脆弱。The restoration effort at the desert outskirts has shown some effects yet the new plant covers are very vulnerable. 虽然沙漠边缘的治理工作开始见效，但植被非常脆弱。He became vulnerable after the divorce, often overreacting to harmless remarks by others. 他离婚以后非常容易受伤，对别人毫无恶意的话语做出过激反应。
这个词汇在美语里是口水词，天天挂在嘴边的，中国同学却很少用，我猜是因为发音有点拧巴的原因。不管你是不是一个“容易受伤的男人女人”，想到脆弱的时候，除了fragile(易碎的)，brittle(脆得像薄玻璃)，多想想vulnerable.
18. Tedious adj. 冗长乏味的，繁重的
【例】Most of us find the TOEFL preparation process tedious. 托福备考过程对我们多数人来说冗长而繁重。Gardening may seem refreshing to others, but it is the most tedious work I have ever done. 种花种菜对别人来说可能很放松，却是我做过的最繁重无聊的工作。
这个词汇的贬义感情色彩比较重，比laborious更为贬义，比tiring 更累人，用出来不用加very也很有强调的效果。
19. Dubious adj. 半信半疑的，可疑的，具有不确定性的
【例】the dubious financial system finally gave way to greedy abuses and collapsed. 可疑的金融系统终于在贪婪的掠夺之下垮塌了。
这个词的两个释义要分清楚使用，一个是半信半疑(unsettled in opinion)，somebody is dubious of something; 一个是令人生疑的，具有不确定性的(unsettled in opinion)，可以直接修饰名词，表示对该名词的quality提出疑问。这个词的中文释义并不是很忠实于英文原意，注意体会括号中的英文释义。
20. Diverse adj. 多种多样的，各不相同的
【例】Although the support for this resolution is unanimous, the reasons are diverse. 虽然大家一致支持这个决议，支持的原因却多种多样。 Universities should improve its financial aid program to maintain a diverse student body. 大学应该要改进他们的助学金体系来保证学生群体的多样性。
多样性这个概念在北美文化中无比重要，它是美国人追求个性至上的社会保障和文化基础。Diverse这个词的根本释义是differing from one another, 谁和谁都不一样。所以才会在大学录取中强调人种的多样性，在社会生活中强调语言和文化的多样性，在政治生活中保护观点的多样性。要用好diverse这个词，先要把diverse这个概念种到我们一辈子趋同的脑子里去。
